Turn the tide – give ocean plastic a new life

RÁK Lab – A Pilot Project
This pilot project forms the foundation of Fab Lab Vágur’s long-term vision of creating a temporary reuse and innovation workshop, based on local resources. Running alongside Fab Lab’s activities over the coming years, the project will explore practical ways to turn waste materials into new products while promoting sustainability, creativity, and local innovation.
Fab Lab Vágur is a creative and sustainable prototyping Lab in Suðuroy, where everyone can access technologies such as 3D printers, lasercutters, CNC machines, and other digital fabrication tools. We combine new technology, local resources, and community collaboration in projects involving recycled materials, wool, seaweed, and plastic. Our goal is to strengthen creativity, innovation, and sustainability in the Faroe Islands.

In this first phase, we will:
- Test (beach) plastic shredding
- Experiment with melting and molding plastic
- Develop the first prototypes
- Build knowledge and practical experience for the next stages
These phases forms the foundation of RÁK.
Why RÁK Matters
This is not just about plastic.
It is about:
- Our fragile natural environment
- Our shared responsibility
- Our ability to turn a challenge into something positive.
By supporting RÁK, you demonstrate that even small communities can lead the way.
We invite everyone to participate in and support a movement working toward a cleaner and more sustainable future. Every contribution is welcome, and we would like to thank you in advance for supporting our dream project.
All support and contributions at this stage will help to:
- Fund two weeks of full-time work by a dedicated two-person team to establish the pop-up lab in November 2026.
- Design and deliver a series of pilot workshops (incl. beach cleanup) with pupils from Vágs Skúli, creating a foundation for a programme that can later be opened to the wider community.
- Create a temporary pop-up space to house the machines, equipment, and display, providing a welcoming temporary hub for learning, experimentation, and public engagement.
- Build momentum for a community-driven and community-owned initiative that raises awareness, encourages collaboration, and supports a more sustainable future.
