Release of 6 Symphonic Works

Elin Brimheim Heinesen, Jens Pauli Heinesen's daughter, has composed six pieces of music to poems by her father - two of which have been released as singles previously and four unknown that haven't been released before.

She has also translated (or respectfully rewritten) the six poems into English. The plan is to release all six works on an EP in two versions - i.e. both in the original language Faroese and in English.

After Elin Brimheim Heinesen in the late eighties composed music for one of her father's poems called Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð (A Chasm of Precious Time), which was later recorded in a symphonic version orchestrated by the Danish composer Søren Hyldgaard, the work has become very popular and is considered by many to be a treasured classic in the Faroe Islands.

The work Sóleyan (The Buttercup), which Elin also recently composed to another beautiful poem by her father, was recorded after a successful crowd-funding campaign with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, Tórshavn Men’s Choir and Elin as the lead vocalist, orchestrated by the Italian composer Enzo De Rosa – and released as a single on November 12th, 2021, as a preview of the EP with six symphonic pieces of music the plan is to release in 2022.

Elin has since found several other poems by her father and has composed new music to four of them, all of which are very powerful poems that deal with universal topics that are more relevant than ever before. The poems are the following:

· Sorgin er vøkur við (Sorrow is also beautiful)
· Eg gangi við einum djúpi (The Chasm Deep Within Me)

After Sóleyan was released in 2021, Elin chose to continue working with Enzo De Rosa on the four pieces of music, which are scheduled to be recorded in Prague on June 15th, 2022, with The Czech National Symphony Orchestra under the supervision of executive producer Laura Lungu. The Czech National Symphony Orchestra has a reputation for being one of Europe's very best symphony orchestras.

The four new pieces of music, as well as the two that have been released before as singles:

· Sóleyan (The Buttercup)
· Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð (A Chasm of Precious Time)

– will all be released together on an EP on November 12th, 2022 - ie. on the day Jens Pauli Heinesen turns 90 - both in a Faroese and an English version.

When Sóleyan was published in 2021, it was in a Faroese and an English version, but Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð has not been released in an English version before.

Symphony Orchestra Concert and Celebration

On Saturday November 12th, 2022, Jens Pauli Heinesen's 90th birthday will also be celebrated with a big honorary concert in The Nordic House in Tórshavn with the Faroe Islands Symphony Orchestra, which counts about 60 musicians in addition to the conductor, and Tórshavn’s Men’s Choir, which counts about 60 men, and with Elin Brimheim Heinesen as the lead vocalist.

On the program are the six above-mentioned pieces of music, which Elin Brimheim Heinesen has composed to her father's poems, five of which the Italian composer, Enzo De Rosa has orchestrated for symphony orchestra. Enzo De Rosa wants to come to the Faroe Islands to play the grand piano for the concert himself.

Between the performances of the works, there will be readings of excerpts from Jens Pauli Heinesen's literature, and while the orchestra plays, photos from Jens Pauli Heinesen's life will be shown on the big screen.

BUT none of these initiatives can be realized without funding. The project as a whole costs more than 500,000 DKK. Elin Brimheim Heinesen puts 100.000 DKK in the project herself. Others with an interest in the project supplement with another 100,000 DKK. And revenue from ticket sales may provide between 60 and 80,000 DKK

But then half is left. The public sector, municipalities and companies are encouraged to co-finance the project or parts of it, but to achieve the goal, crowdfunding is undoubtedly necessary in addition.

Therefore, we encourage the people of the Faroe Islands and others to participate in investing in this project in return for good compensations, which are stated in the column to the right.

We hope to at least be able to collect DKK 50,000 this way. But this in itself will not be enough to reach the end goal... So it would of course be really great if we succeed in collecting even more, because the more likely it is, that the project will be realised and the better the end result will be! :-)

Why honour the Faroese author Jens Pauli Heinesen on his 90th birthday? There are many good reasons for this. The importance of his authorship cannot be underestimated. During his lifetime, he was one of the Faroe Islands' greatest and most beloved writers – and still is to great extent. His books have been a regular curriculum in Faroese schools for many years. And his extensive authorship of about 40 works has greatly enriched the Faroese people, the Faroese language and has mirrored the Faroese culture and strengthened the Faroese identity. No one, like Jens Pauli Heinesen, has written so much prose about life in the Faroe Islands during World War II and in the post-war period right up to the turn of the millennium.

Must Not Go Into Oblivion
But despite the great importance Jens Pauli Heinesen’s written words have had, both for the Faroese people and for friends of the Faroe Islands and Faroese culture, his words can soon drown in the digital maelstrom, unless something is done from time to time to shed light on the author's life work.

Jens Pauli Heinesen's multifaceted writing deals with eternal, universal human themes that are as relevant today as ever before but seen from a particular Faroese angle. The Faroese people need literature that describes the world seen through Faroese eyes. The stories that Jens Pauli Heinesen has written are stories that most Faroese can recognize themselves in. They therefore still play a significant identity-creating role. They do not deserve to be forgotten. And future, potential readers do not deserve to miss out on this literature.

Of Great Importance to Faroese Language
Jens Pauli Heinesen writes in a beautiful literary language, so to this day, he also contributes greatly to the preservation of the Faroese language, which is increasingly threatened by globalization. Although literature production in the Faroe Islands is impressively large measured in relation to the population, the Faroe Islands are still a relatively very small language area, which limits how many books can be written and published in Faroese. Jens Pauli Heinesen's many literary works fill nicely in the Faroese literature catalogue and contribute greatly to the overall Faroese reading material, which is so important for Faroese to survive as a language.

Jens Pauli Heinesen's authorship is a gift to the Faroese people and to all those who like to read Faroese books. Future generations should also be given the opportunity to discover, read and hear Jens Pauli Heinesen, so that they too can enjoy and benefit from his literature. This in itself is one of the most important reasons to draw attention to Jens Pauli Heinesen.

Focus on the Poems
This time, special focus will be placed on his poems. He did not write many poems, but the poems he wrote are remarkable and deserve to be highlighted. He was also a great music lover, especially of classical music. Therefore, it is a matter of course to celebrate Jens Pauli Heinesen's 90th birthday with various events, among other things, the release and performance of spectacular classical-inspired original music to poems by the author, so the poems hopefully will live on for a long time in the future. This is what we are looking for co-financing to realize.

Short Biography
Jens Pauli Heinesen was born on November 12, 1932, and died on July 19, 2011, aged 78 years. He grew up in the village Sandavágur in the Faroe Islands but moved to the capital Tórshavn already at the age of 14 to train as an office clerk. But it was not for him, so he was allowed by his parents to go to school. He first took a preliminary and then a high school graduation in Tórshavn. Subsequently, he was trained as a teacher at Emdrupborg Seminarium in Denmark. After graduating as a teacher in 1956, he worked as a teacher until he retired in 1970, then devoted himself to the work of writing, as he had wished since he was a boy.

The Authorship
Jens Pauli Heinesen was one of the Faroe Islands' most prolific writers. Among other things, he wrote short story collections, novels and plays – a total of around 40 works. In his literary works, Jens Pauli Heinesen wrote about the lived life – especially in the village where he spent his childhood and early adolescence and not least in the capital, where the author lived most of his life. As a writer, he was wide-ranging and masterfully described general human conditions. The topics were i.a. the artist and society, the child and its world, the rural community and the city, as well as the winding paths of love. A recurring theme in his writing was the victim and the executioner. Literature lovers have said that several of Jens Pauli Heinesen's works are on a par with world literature, and that if he had written in English, for example, his works would probably have become much more widespread.

Another Faroese author, Gunnar Hoydal, has written about Jens Pauli Heinesen's authorship: “Here smells, here smells, here you get up in the hands and between the fingers of images, so that the reader must think: about life in the Faroe Islands during this period, disappears, but only this authorship remained, so we knew for all time to come what it was like to live and be in this country these years. ”

Recognitions and Other Achievements
Jens Pauli Heinesen received several official recognitions while he was alive. Four times he was awarded the Bókmentavirðisløn M. A. Jacobsens (Tórshavn City Council Culture Prize), in 1959 for the short story collection Hin vakra kvirran (The beautiful silence), in 1969 for the short story collection Aldurnar spæla á sandi (The Waves Play on the Beach), in 1973 for the novel Frænir eitur ormurin (Fafnir is the Name of the Dragon), and in 1993 for the novel Bláfelli (Blue Mountain) and for the book series in seven volumes Á ferð inn í eina óendaliga søgu (On a journey into an infinite story). Twice he was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize, for the novel Leikur tín er sum hin ljósi dagur (Your Play is Like the Bright Day) in 1987 and for Bláfelli (Blue Mountain) in 1995. In addition, he received the Mentanarvirðisløn Landsins (Faroe Islands National Government Culture Prize) for his life’s work in 1999.

Jens Pauli Heinesen was chairman of Rithøvundafelag Føroya (The Faroese Writers' Association) in the years 1968-1975, where his contribution was instrumental ia. to books becoming VAT-free in the Faroe Islands.

He was named an honorary member of the Faroese Writers' Association, the Der Deutsch-Färöische Freundeskreis e. V., the Samfundet Sverige-Färöarna and was also honored by the Rithøfundasamband Íslands.

He was a long-time member of Norrøna Felagið, which i.a. published the book The Faroe Islands today in 1966, which he edited.

And he was one of the main forces behind the documentary Jamen se nu Færøerne - We Don’t Build the Faroe Islands for Practical Reasons) in 1975.

He has been translated into several languages, such as Icelandic, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Greenlandic and German.

ELIN BRIMHEIM HEINESEN

Elin Brimheim Heinesen is Jens Pauli Heinesen’s daughter. She is known in the Faroe Islands as a singer and composer. She has published three albums - NALJA, together with Kári L. Jacobsen (1988), Yndisløg, together with the group Ad Libitum (2010) and the solo album Handan Stjørnurnar (2018), In addition to being a backing singer on several other people's albums.

Elin's most famous song is without a doubt Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð (A Chasm of Precious Time) from the NALJA album from 1988, composed to a poem by her father, Jens Pauli Heinesen. In 2002, the song was republished in a new version, recorded with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Tórshavn’s Men’s Choir, orchestrated by the Danish composer Søren Hyldgaard.

The song Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð got a very good reception. Among other things, expressed in 2018, when Kringvarp Føroya, the Faroe Islands' National TV and Radio, arranged a poll where listeners could vote on which Faroese song, they thought was the best that has been released in the last 50 years. Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð got a top position as No. 4 among the several thousand songs released all those years. "I am immensely proud of that," says Elin.

Elin Brimheim Heinesen says: "When I composed the song Sóleyan to my father’s poem in 2012 in connection with the celebration of my father's 80th birthday, I heard a symphony orchestra for my inner ear. Ever since, I have dreamed of releasing the song in a symphonic version, just like Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð.

In 2021 I finally succeeded and was able to release the song Sóleyan in an arrangement by Enzo De Rosa for symphony orchestra and male choir with me as the lead vocalist - the same orchestra and choir that the song Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð was recorded with."

Now that her father’s 90th birthday is coming up, she was inspired to compose some more songs – this time to four of her father's poems, which she hopes to publish in symphonic arrangements and present at an honorary concert for her father on his birthday on November 12, 2022.

Enzo De Rosa is a composer, arranger / orchestrator and virtuoso concert pianist from Naples, Italy, but now lives in Montreal, Canada. He has over 30 years of experience working with many different genres.

Enzo De Rosa started getting piano lessons when he was 6 years old. Since then, he has developed his musical skills with masters such as A.Ciccolini. B. Petrushansky, J. Demus, J. Achucarro, G. Wilson, E. Fadini. S. Fiorentino, P. Badura Skoda, R. Firkusny, L. Berman, J. Swann. He is trained in composition and modern music with L. Bacalov and F. Mannino, in addition to organ and harpsichord. He has had a long music career in many different countries - Italy, France, Finland, Bulgaria, Egypt, Israel, Canada and elsewhere - where he has worked with over 600 music projects - composed, arranged, orchestrated and produced music for film, television , theater, opera, music albums, etc.

Enzo De Rosa is an eclectic musician, pianist and composer, endowed with an innate sense of the beautiful and the tragic, of nostalgia and hope, lending to a deeply sensitive interpretation of the material at hand.

Moreover, he draws from a vast traditional repertoire that is perhaps only matched by his own uncompromising creativity, combined with an infectious joy for music and life.

He has also lent his immense talent in recitals and concertos as a soloist, as well as in chamber musical groups.

Laura Lungu, executive producer of this project, has studied music since childhood, graduating in music with violin specialisation. She graduated with honours in Musicology and Performing Arts at Bologna University, followed by a Master’s degree in Musical Theatre Direction.

She succeeded in developing both an international career as a violinist and at the same time as manager in the entertainment industry, working with artists such as Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Ennio Morricone, Andrea Bocelli and many others. She recorded to date more than 300 movie soundtracks as violinist, music producer, recording musical supervisor and orchestra contractor for SONY, EMI, WARNER, BMG, Buena Vista, RAI, MEDIASET, etc.

Laura has extensive experience – among other things she has taken the lead role positions of Music Producer, Artistic Director, Recording producer, Artists Manager as well as Production Director for shows, concerts, music recordings, festivals, corporate and private events with high visibility in Italy and abroad.

She is the founder and General Manager of Concertissimo Entertainment since 1998, and the founder and Artistic Director of the Concertissimo Orchestra, established since 2007 in Rome, specialised in movie soundtracks recording with orchestra and choirs.

THE CZECH NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Performing and continuously growing for 26 years, the Czech National Symphony Orchestra (CNSO) has earned an enviable reputation among Europe’s top symphonic ensembles. Renowned for its versatility, the orchestra annually presents a broad programme ranging from classical music concerts to contemporary genres, film scores, jazz and musicals. Since 2005 the Czech National Symphony Orchestra has also organised the summer Prague Proms Festival, which with its impressive array of prominent international performers, appeals to a diverse audience year in year out.

Composers, conductors, and performers such as Ennio Morricone, Lalo Schifrin, James Morrison, Branford & Wynton Marsalis, Pino Donnagio, Giuliano Taviani, José Carreras, Danny Elfman, Vince Mendoza, Giuseppe Tornatore, Carl Davis, Steven Mercurio, Marcello Rota, Christian Lindberg, Chick Corea, Vladimir Cosma repeatedly come back to Prague to either record with the orchestra or perform in the beautiful Smetana Hall at Prague’s Municipal House, the home concert stage of the orchestra.

The Czech National Symphony Orchestra was set up in 1993 by trumpet player Jan Hasenöhrl along with the legendary conductor Zden?k Košler. In 1996, the American Paul Freeman took over as Chief Conductor, and remained in this position for an amazing ten years.

Now the orchestra has worked with its principal conductor Libor Pešek since 2007 – a period which could be described as exceptional both in terms of its subscription series as well as five hugely successful tours around Great Britain, as well as the historic feat of the recording marathon between 2007 and 2017 during which time Libor Pešek and the CNSO managed to record the complete symphonies of Gustav Mahler.

Libor Pešek stepped down from his role in the spring of 2019 and was replaced by the American conductor Steven Mercurio. This fantastic musician and former pupil of Leonard Bernstein has worked with the orchestra for several years now and the partnership promises to bring about a number of exceptional new projects.

FØROYA SYMFONIORKESTUR

The Faroe Islands Symphony Orchestra started in 1983. A music school was established on probation the year before with some trained musicians, and in 1983 the Føroya Musikkskúli (Faroe Islands Music School) was finally established with about 10 music teachers. This, as well as the new beautiful Nordic House, which opened in June the same year, meant that now suddenly there were both professional musicians and a good setting, which made it possible to run a symphony orchestra.

It was the music teachers Magna Synnevåg and Kanny Sambleben who, together with Alex Sólstein, Bogi Lützen and others, established the new orchestra, which was named Føroya Symfoniorkestur. Faroese and foreign educated musicians in the Faroes together with the best students in the music school, as well as some professional musicians from abroad were to man the new orchestra. This is the form that has been used all the years since. The good development these years, however, has been that the skills and the number of Faroese musicians has grown steadily.

For the past 20 years, the orchestra has made great strides. The activities have grown considerably from about two annual concerts to about 25 concerts in 2014 e.g. The progress has been purposeful. This is i.a. a result of increased funding and the following increased activity, together with the good work the music schools do, where of several of the professional musicians in the orchestra act as teachers. Some have also been in the music school since childhood and in the symphony orchestra before going abroad to take higher music education.

The orchestra's staff is usually around 70 musicians and is conducted by Bernhardur Wilkinson. In addition, there is also a choir with about 120 good singers, who have all been through auditions, as well as a children's choir of about 200 children. The Faroese Singing Teachers' Association is responsible for the large children's choir arranging the Children and Christmas Concert, which the Faroese Symphony Orchestra has played the first weekend in December for the past many years.

The orchestra has been on three trips abroad in the last 30 years. In Shetland, Denmark and in connection with the celebration of the orchestra's 30th anniversary, the symphony orchestra had a concert in Akureyri and in the world-famous Harpa in Reykjavík in Iceland in the autumn of 2013.

TÓRSHAVNAR MANSKÓR

The Tórshavn’s Male Voice Choir was established in 1987, when the choir had its first public performance with the brass band GHM in the Nordic House on March 22nd, 1987. The choir has been on several concert tours abroad - in Iceland, Denmark, Wales, Scotland, Shetland, in the Baltic countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Austria and Russia.

Tórshavn Male Voice Choir published its first CD in 1997. It's called »Tórshavnar Manskór« - or »Tórshavn Male Choir«. There are some powerful songs including »Føroyar mítt land« and »Ódn«. There is also the old Faroese hymn »Som den gyldne sol frembryder« which Jákup Dahl translated into Faroese and which Heri Eysturlíð arranged for male choir. There are also some songs in different tongues - e.g. in Icelandic and English.

The choir's second CD was released in 1999. It's called »Vit eru føroyingar« - or »We are Faroese«. The title has its origin in the first line of the ironic poem »Kvæði fremsta framtakskappa landsins« - lyrics by Regin Dahl and music by Kári Bæk - and is about being a Faroese of culture. On this CD there are several songs from a competition which the choir held in 1996. The competition was about getting new compositions for male choir. There are also some songs in Danish and Icelandic, and the last song on this CD is the national anthem in its original arrangement as composed by Peter Alberg - also known as Peter í Geil.

The choir's third CD was released in 2008. It's called »Væl má gagnast« - or »May it do you good« which is the last line in the amusing song »Matlepin« - or »The menu« by Nyholm Debes. Furthermore this CD is the first to be produced as a surround CD which means that the listener is surrounded by sound as in a concert auditorium. There are three types of sound: 1) Super Audio 5.1 surround, 2) Super Audio Stereo, and 3) regular Stereo. Songs from Bulgaria, Denmark, Iceland and USA are on this CD, and also some good soloists: Andrias Reinert, Peter H. Niclasen, Fróði D. Sandoy, Birgir Krossteig and others.

The choir's fourth CD was released in 2009. It's called »Kantata til 900 ára ólavsøkuhátíðina« - a cantata composed by Edw. Mitens and J. Waagstein in 1930 to remember the Norwegian king Ólav Haraldsson who died in 1030. It was performed on 29th of July which is the Faroese national day. All seven parts of the cantata are on the CD as well as the introductory and concluding hymns »Fjallprúða heim« and »Harra Guð títt dýra navn og æra«. Peter H. Niclasen and Mouritz Mohr are soloists.

Six poems by Jens Pauli Heinesen

These are the poems Elin has composed music to and will publish on an EP on her father’s, Jens Pauli Heinesen's 90th birthday on November12th, 2022.

The music will be recorded both in the original language Faroese and in an English translation by Elin Brimheim Heinesen.

The works have their world premiere at an honorary concert for Jens Pauli Heinesen with the Faroe Islands Symphony Orchestra in the Nordic House on the same day as he turns 90.

But this can only be done if we reach the goal of funding.
